The cards, made of more or less thick cardboard, were usually illustrated with characters from manga/TV series/movies, or sportsmen (mainly baseball players and sumos). On this menko you can see KyĆ»ka, one of our original characters. It is a kappa (creature from Japanese folklore) and its name comes from the English word ācucumberā (which is pronounced ākyĆ»kanbaā when written in katakana) because kappas love cucumbers.
